Mammoth Cave Trails
Sam
Hey all, time for another trail action alert!
I joined good friends Jeff Murray, Johnny Johnson, and Ranger Holman today at Mammoth Cave to work on the new re-route and a few other spots needing attention.
Ranger Henry Holman has flagged a great piece of singletrack that will take the place of that crazy good downhill section. It was bad though and was a very reckless piece of property and needed to be retired before it got worse! It was bad!
Here's a few details for the unknowing;
Mammoth Cave has entered in an agreement with IMBA mtn bikers/ Bowling Green League of Cyclist. This maintenance agreement has been years in the making, actually IMBA's lawyer Stuart Ulfrets was personally involved the early days. After much paperwork and some great communication, the park agreed to allow us to access the Sal Hollow loop on an experimental basis only. This would be down in exchange for maintenance considerations. The horse trail was in bad shape and since we are the only ones concerned enough to actually care how a trail holds up, we were committed. That was about 3 years ago and Ranger Holman has really been impressed with the results! He is a great teacher and an extremely intelligent Ranger of the park. We have a friend at Mammoth Cave, just don't expect the rules to be bent in your breaking them!
Trail Description. Sal Hollow was basically an equestrian trail. So it had and has some issues at times. But now, they are working on the road coming into the area and horse trailers aren't allowed so there is a scarsity of horses on the trails. Its' a rugged loop with some extremely good long climbs and very technical rock sections.
They are working up there about every other weekend and need some good help benching the new re-route. I know we have a lot going on here in middle TN. Jeff and Johnny have both with other friends from Bowling Green have come down and help us at Lock 4 many times and attended many of our camping and epic rides. Please find the time to visit Mammoth Cave. Take your bike, do some work and ride. The trails are always open. They feed all their trailworkers really good too!
